Chapter 11

Emmalee

After running the mail route, I head home to change clothes. It was hot as fuck today. I need a quick shower just to face the heat again.

I forgot how hot Alabama summers are. Even though Nashville’s in the south, it’s not nearly as hot as this gulf coast heat.

After a cold shower, I grab a couple bottles of water, throw them in my bag, and head out to the truck.

I zone out on the drive, focusing on football instead of Emmalee.

I try not to think about how long it’s been since I’ve stepped foot on my hometown field—a field they named after me…an honor I’m not sure I deserve anymore.

These kids, though…they deserve my time and full attention.

My mind wanders back to seeing Dolly Hanes’ boy, Nash, working out in the yard this morning. He’s fourteen and starts high school this year. Kid has a hell of an arm on him. When I asked if he played football, he said he didn’t know much about sports other than on PlayStation.

I told him he should come check out practice with me and talk to Coach.

I drive past the high school to a separate driveway leading out to the field. The familiar red and gold sign updated with a fresh coat of paint announces you’re now in Tiger territory.

Home of Mathew “Mattie” Lincoln.

Seeing my achievements standing twelve feet tall should fill me with pride, and it does, but it’s also a reminder that I’m not that man anymore.

I put my truck in park and walk out to the sideline, my feet feeling heavier with every step.

From the updated turf, Nash pulls off his helmet and waves awkwardly. I shoot him back a wave when I feel the familiar clap on my shoulder.

“That your doin’?” Coach Turner asks, a hint of surprise in his voice.

“Maybe.”

“Heard he had an arm like a rocket but hadn’t seen it for myself until today.”

“Yeah, I happened to see him out in the yard. He’s never played football before but found an old ball in the garage and started tossing it around.”

“Oh, that’s right. Dolly and Emmalee are neighbors now since Dean bought the place.”

“Uh, yeah. I’ve been doing some work over there.”

“I heard. That’s good for ya. Don’t need you going all soft and getting out of shape.” He pats his own belly.

“I hear that. Between Grams and all the other baked goods along my route, my pants are fitting a little snug.”

“I can’t imagine.” He chuckles. “Well, good call on the Hanes’ kid.”

I nod. “He said he doesn’t know much about football, but from what I can see, he has a natural talent.”

“Kind of reminds me of a young you.” Excitement fills me as I watch Nash on the field as the assistant coach works with his group.

Coach isn’t wrong, he definitely reminds me of myself when I was his age.

I step onto the familiar turf, and memories hit me like a wave. The scent of freshly cut grass, the echoing cheers of the
